KISS to open a coffee house in Australia?

28 March 2010

The band KISS will be opening their very own coffee shop in Melbourne, Australia. The shop will showcase memorabilia from the band’s 35-year history and offer coffee and blended coffee drinks.

At first, I was a little skeptical about this idea. When actors try singing careers, it hardly ever goes well, so why would it be a good idea for KISS to cross over into coffee? Considering there’s over $1 Million invested in this project so far, the coffee better be delicious.

Some of my fears were eased when I read that there was already a KISS coffee shop in Myrtle Beach. This first coffee and memorabilia shop in Florida has been open for nearly four years now, and seems to be a sustainable business model. When I think of music in a coffee shop, it’s generally hippies and indie bands playing on acoustic guitar, and not hard rock with metal guitar solos. Best of luck to this investment project, but I’d personally like to enjoy my coffee to the sound of acoustic instruments and poetic lyrics for now.

Dark Roast Coffees are Gentler on the Stomach

21 March 2010

20% of people suffer from stomach irritation, and for many, that means limiting their coffee intake. But, a recent discovery means that those suffering from stomach irritation should be drinking more–not less–coffee.

A report published at the 239th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, found that dark-roasted coffees such as espressos and French roast causes the stomach to reduce acid production.

“This discovery is going to help a lot of people who suffer from coffee sensitivity,” said Doctors Veronika Somoza and Thomas Hofmann, on their recent study. “As coffee-lovers, we’re very excited about this research.”

Other research indicates that 40 million people in America either avoid or limit coffee intake in order to avoid stomach irritation. Although some have found ways to cope, such as taking a heart burn medication with coffee or drinking a blend marketed as being easy on the stomach, many would like to have more freedom in choosing when and which coffee they will drink.

First there was a tea party…

14 March 2010

In the last year, a political movement emerged which has become known as the Tea Party movement. A mostly conservative group, Tea Partiers hold events (known as, you guessed it, Tea Parties) around the nation to protest liberal leadership and agendas such as the stimulus bill and healthcare reform. TEA initially stood for Taxed Enough Already, but the idea of the “Tea Party” as a legitimate political movement has taken hold in American politics.

Politics aside, though, some of us just aren’t tea people. Now there’s a movement for the progressives in America (or just the politically apathetic coffee lovers) known as the “Coffee Party” which focuses on bipartisan partnership, socially conscious voting and accountability for our elected leaders. The Coffee Party was founded by a documentary film maker who was frustrated by the protests, shouting and “movements” that didn’t do anything but aggravate political differences and prejudices. The Coffee Party is designed to be about talking, ideally over a steaming cup of Joe.

The names of these two political factions testify to the sway of savory beverages in American life. What could be more patriotic than a Tea Party (think Boston! Revolutionaries with a mission and passion to back it up) or a cup of coffee at the local cafe to smooth over the political and ideological differences of rivals.

Kudos, to both conservatives and liberals, for adopting such delicious sounding movement names!
